Understanding Feed Additives and Their Role in Modern Animal Nutrition

Feed additives are substances incorporated into animal feed to support nutrition, health, and overall performance. Their use has evolved steadily alongside changes in farming practices, livestock management, and consumer expectations around food quality and safety. Rather than being a recent development, these substances have a long history tied to efforts to improve feed efficiency and maintain animal well-being under diverse rearing conditions.

At a basic level, feed additives include a wide range of compounds such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, probiotics, and organic acids. Each category serves a specific function. Vitamins and minerals help prevent deficiencies, while amino acids support growth and protein synthesis. Enzymes improve the digestibility of feed ingredients, allowing animals to better utilize nutrients that would otherwise pass through unused. Probiotics and prebiotics, on the other hand, focus on maintaining a balanced gut environment, which is increasingly recognized as central to animal health.
